It started with a cocktail and conversation over happy hour with me and my other 40 year old plus friends. We began to reminisce about our 20’s, the golden years. We laughed about the amount of energy and lack of love handles we had. I began to feel nostalgic remembering when I had more than enough stamina to work out, work hard, and even play hard in the evenings. My early 30’s wasn’t much different. For my 30th birthday I threw myself an 80’s prom. I wore, and actually FIT in, my 16-year-old prom dress. But somewhere in my late 30’s and definitely into my early 40’s the inevitable cruel switch happened, fatigue, easy weight gain, hair thinning. All those super attractive qualities you want to carry into your 2nd half of life. JUST when you hit that mid-life season, know your wiser, and become in tune with who you truly are, your body says “OK, that’s enough. It’s time for me to start giving up.” We began to playfully make fun of ourselves and each other about our aging symptoms, from restless night sleeps to achy bodies. And we’re still in our 40s! What would it be like in our 50’s for goodness sake?
As the conversation progressed, my neighbor ordered another tonic and began to tell us about her middle child who was diagnosed as having a hormone deficiency. The doctors took it very seriously and took action to quickly get it corrected. I smirked and chimed in “I wish my doctor would take my hormones that seriously.” And that is where my interest and research began. Why would physicians look at a young person who is diagnosed as having hormonal deficiencies want to help, but someone reaching middle age is basically told to "get over it" and that their age is creeping up on them. I needed to dig deeper and got a recommendation for a local provider that focuses on specific hormone deficiencies and how to RENEW hormones. She introduced me to bio identical hormone replacement therapy. I was completely unaware that there was an option of taking my hormones to an optimal level.
I began to look at some evident symptoms in my life that I just “have” or that I associated with old age. Were these directly connected to my hormones and even more so could I change whatever imbalances were causing them? Could my hormones be replenished and if so would that replenish me? What if science has caught up? I was diagnosed with a thyroid disorder years ago and was just shuffled through an assembly line system, handed a Levothyroxine, patted on the head and pushed out the door to get rechecked every few months. But now I was beginning to read stories of these women who found the right kind of thyroid, the right dose, the right hormone therapy and they began to feel that youthful feeling again.
I decided to let go of the old thinking that these symptoms were unsolvable problems. Instead, I sought guidance for a new long-lasting resolution. I was not going to settle for the status quo but would seek change. At Bloom Wellness they listen, they educate, and they provide a new path to restoring what you’ve lost.
